dMAT
What it is, whether it applies to you, the dates, the fee, and how it changes your Masters timeline. Every fact here is checked against the official g.a.s.t. and APS India pages, which are linked throughout.
The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a new aptitude test being added to the APS documentation process for Indian graduates applying to German Masters programmes.
It applies from the Summer Semester 2027 Masters intake, and only if your previous degree is in Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics; or Business and Management. If you are applying for a Bachelors or a PhD, or your degree is in another field, it does not apply to you.
Registration closes 15 September 2026. The test is on 26 September 2026, certificates are available from 12 October 2026, and the fee is €150.
It does not replace APS. It is an extra document that goes into your APS application, and your APS certificate is still what universities ask for.
A standardised academic aptitude test, developed by German universities together with g.a.s.t. — the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung, the same organisation behind TestDaF.
It is taken digitally at test centres appointed by g.a.s.t. It is not an at-home online test, and it is not a language test. Your German or English proficiency requirements are unchanged by it — see our comparison of the five German language exams for those.
The certificate is issued by g.a.s.t., not by APS India. You enclose it with your APS application documents, and it is then referenced on your APS certificate.
One useful detail: the dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely. Unlike a language certificate, it does not expire, so taking it does not start a clock you have to beat.
This is the only question most readers need answered, so here it is plainly.
You need the dMAT if you are applying for a Masters in Germany from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards, and your previous degree falls in one of these fields:
Engineering · Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics · Business and Management
You do not need it if any of the following is true:
You are applying for a Bachelors or a PhD. Your previous degree is outside those fields. You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026. You shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026. You already hold an APS certificate. You are on an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programme.
If you are unsure which category your degree falls into — for example a BCA, a BBA, or an interdisciplinary degree — that is a judgement call worth confirming rather than assuming, because getting it wrong costs you an intake.
These are the 2026 dates published for the first Indian test cycle.
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration opened | 29 June 2026 |
| Registration deadline | 15 September 2026 |
| Test date | 26 September 2026 |
| Certificates available | 12 October 2026 |
| Fee | €150 |
Registration, payment and booking are handled by g.a.s.t. APS India remains responsible for verifying your documents. They are two separate organisations doing two separate jobs, which is why you register in one place and submit in another.
The €150 is on top of the APS fee, not instead of it.
Two parts.
The core module measures general cognitive and analytical skills through three subtests. Based on the official preparation videos, the task types include figure sequences, mathematical equations, and Latin squares — pattern and logic problems rather than syllabus recall.
The subject module tests applying those skills to academic problem solving. For the Indian APS route this is the General Academic Module.
Tasks are in single-choice format, and the test language for the current subject modules is English.
What this means practically: this is closer to an aptitude test like the CAT or GRE quant sections than to a university exam. You cannot revise your Bachelors syllabus for it. You can get familiar with the question formats, which is what the official preparation material is for.
This is where a lot of the advice circulating online is guesswork, so here is what is actually published.
g.a.s.t. states that universities decide individually how to use dMAT results, and that the percentile rank can be used to establish cut scores. RWTH Aachen University and Georg-August University Göttingen are named as currently using it as a selection criterion.
So it is not a pass-or-fail gate applied uniformly across Germany. Some universities will use it to select, others may simply require that you have it. What any individual university does with your score is a question for that university's programme page, not for a consultancy blog.
We are not going to publish a "good score" target, because none is published and inventing one would not help you.
The dMAT sits in front of APS, and APS sits in front of your university applications. That is the part people miss.
APS processing takes 6 to 10 weeks on its own. If the dMAT certificate has to be enclosed with your APS documents, then your planning date is no longer your university deadline, and it is not even the APS deadline. It is the dMAT registration deadline.
Work backwards in this order: university application deadline, then APS processing time before that, then the dMAT certificate date before that, then the dMAT registration deadline before that.
For the Summer Semester 2027 intake with the 2026 test cycle, that chain starts at 15 September 2026.
Our full guide to a Masters in Germany covers the rest of that sequence — eligibility, VPD and uni-assist, English versus German programmes, and costs.
Assuming it applies to everyone. It is field-specific and intake-specific. Bachelors applicants in particular are worrying about a test they do not need.
Assuming it replaces APS. It does not. It is an additional document inside the APS process.
Reading dates off consultancy blogs. Several currently disagree with each other and with the official pages. Registration deadlines are the one thing worth checking at the source every time.
Paying for coaching before trying the official material. g.a.s.t. publishes preparation videos and samples for free.
Planning from the university deadline. The binding date is the dMAT registration deadline, which sits two steps earlier in the chain.
Rules, dates and fees change, and this page is a summary rather than the authority. Check these before you plan around anything here.

If you check one of these and still cannot tell whether it applies to you, that is a reasonable thing to be unsure about. Message us and we will look at it with you.
